​Listed below are certain by-laws that are most pertinent to waterfront property owners.

Useful By-Law References for the Waterfront

Building:
Occupancy Permit Requirement Checklist:  What steps do you need to take before applying for our occupancy permit?  This checklist is supplied by the City of Elliot Lake Building Services Department..  To find out more about building permits click here.

​Building Permit Information:

Shoreline Residential Zone Consolidation Requirements By-Law:  This by-law outlines building easements and buffer zone requirements on waterfront properties. (updated on August 8, 2016)

Fire Permits:
You are required to obtain a fire permit to burn outdoors from April 1 to October 31.  These are available at the local Fire Department for a fee of $5.00. Don't burn with out it!

Open Air Fires:
This link outlines the by-law that regulates the setting of open air fires and provides for the prevention of the spreading of fires within the Corporation of the City of Elliot Lake.  NOTE: Chinese lanterns are now banned in the City of Elliot Lake.
Firearms:
Firearms By-Law:  This by-law outlines restrictions of the use of firearms within the City of Elliot Lake limits.  Firearms include guns, air guns, spring guns, crossbows, longbows and any class thereof.
Fireworks:
​The Fireworks By-Law outlines: 
  • the type of fireworks allowed
  • the age of persons allowed to handle fireworks
  • the dates fireworks displays are allowed
Prohibit Feeding of Wildlife (including baiting)
Prohibition of Feeding of Wildlife:  The City of Elliot Lake deems that the feeding of wildlife contributes to the destruction of private property, increases the potential for contact with unpredictable, aggressive and dangerous animals, increases the potential for contact and spread of infectious diseases and increases the potential for vehicular collisions.  This also pertains to the baiting of animals for the purpose of hunting within the city limits.
Government Laws re: Illegal Dumping
It is illegal to dump anything including slash on any government (MNR) owned lands.  To review the actual document, go to Item 27 of the Public Land Act.
